Week 5 - Good, Bad, Ugly

A week that is marked by Michael Crabtree officially signing with the 49ers. While we’re all glad that this saga is over, it’s time to look at Crabtree’s potential as a fantasy player. From where I sit right now, I don’t see very much at all. First, the 49ers are good without him. They are 3-1 (and could be 4-0 without that last second loss to Favre and the Vikings). Secondly, Singletary loves to run the ball. This is a run first team that plays solid defense. Finally, Singletary has stated that he doesn’t see Crabtree making an on-the-field impact until week 9 or week 11. I don’t want someone on my bench who isn’t going to do much until the last four or five weeks of the season, if at all. That being said, it’s time for the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly.

The Good

Kevin Walter
(@ Arizona): He only had one catch for 41 yards last week. Yet I watched their game against the Raiders and Houston definitely wanted to establish the run. On paper, these are two very good passing offenses. Walter does have the advantage of lining up opposite of Andre Johnson, who should draw most of the attention of the Cardinal’s secondary most of the time.

Brent Celek (Tampa Bay): 22 receptions and 2 touchdowns in only three games have made Celek a great fantasy sleeper so far this year. Look for that trend to continue against a horrid Tampa Bay defense. A possible word of caution though is McNabb is planning on starting this game. Kolb liked using Celek as a safety valve, and this could slightly hurt his value. Obviously I don’t think it will very much because he is in the Good section this week. Start him with confidence this week.

Vernon Davis (Atlanta): 10 receptions to go along with 3 touchdowns in his last two games has made Vernon relevant in the fantasy world again. His talent has never been in question, but his work ethic has come under fire in years past. That seems to be no longer a question, as his once biggest critic Mike Singletary has even raved about the improvement of Davis. Look for Shaun Hill to continually look his direction as the 49ers have a tough home game here against the Falcons.

The Bad

LenDale White
(Indianapolis): White and the Titans have the Sunday night game at home against a hot Colts team. It’s hard to believe that Tennessee is still winless, and also hard to believe how little value LenDale has had. He has 1 touchdown so far this season. For those of you keeping track at home, that’s one more than I have. With Chris Johnson as the undisputed number one back, White’s only value comes if he can vulture some scores. It hasn’t happened much this year, and I don’t think it will.

Antonio Bryant (@ Philadelphia): The Bucs are at Philly. The Bucs don’t have a good offense. The Eagles have a good defense. This is not a good match-up for the Buccaneers. Bryant still has value. Unfortunately, Tampa Bay’s quarterback situation is up in the air. The benching of Leftwich for Josh Johnson has some who follow the team scratching their heads. Bryant is a good receiver who doesn’t have a strong enough arm to allow him to catch the deep ball. Look for other receiving options this week.

Cedric Benson (@ Baltimore): Benson’s been great so far this year, and will continue to have a productive fantasy season. However, the Bengals defense did not look good against the Browns last week, and they gave up a few huge plays in the passing game. Look for Baltimore to get ahead early and force the Bengals to throw a lot. Plus, the Ravens defense is pretty good I hear. Long story short, there are other flex options at running back that could be used instead of Cedric this week.

The Ugly

Limus Sweed
(@ Detroit): Sweed should be looked at only in deep, deep leagues. He’s only caught one ball this season, but when I see someone playing Detroit it automatically raises their fantasy value. The Lions gave up over 40 points to the Bears last week. While I look for the Steelers to run and run often, Sweed could be fantasy relevant if he can burn the Lions for a deep touchdown score.

Sidney Rice
(@ St. Louis): Sidney’s soared the past two weeks, catching 9 balls for 126 yards and 2 scores. Favre seems to be getting more comfortable throwing the ball, and is looking for Rice more and more. While AP is probably going to run all over the Rams, the Vikings can’t run on every play. Start Rice this week if one of your other receivers is on a bye or injured.

Justin Fargas (@ New York Giants): Ok, I’m not looking for a big day from anyone on Oakland’s roster. However, McFadden’s out for a few weeks and it seems like Fargas will be the main back for the Raiders. They’re playing a really tough Giants defense, so I don’t expect a lot. But if you own McFadden, Fargas isn’t a bad play here. If by some fluke the Raiders score a touchdown, chances are it will be Fargas who finds the pay dirt.

In other news, Browns receiver Braylon Edwards was traded to the Jets this week. While some of you may think that it’s because he punched LeBron’s friend or hasn’t been performing well for Cleveland this year, there is another factor involved. While these all may have contributed to his leaving Cleveland, something that I think had a big impact on him being traded is that he was under “The Good” for me last week and caught zero balls. Let this be a warning sign to players who fall under that category: If you do not perform when you are filed by me under “The Good,” the ramifications could be very costly.
