The Square Cafe
The Square Cafe

Atmosphere
The café’s European style is what first caught my attention. Located in Regent Sqare on S. Braddock Ave, the outdoor dining right along the road makes you feel like you are in the center of all the morning hustle and bustle. Being the “square” café, the logo is several circles bearing the name and several of their services, such as “to go” and “art”. The art aspect of the café/diner is seen in the choice of tableware and the people who work there. I ate outside to get the full summer morning experience, but the interior was bright and cheery. With the classic diner counter and stools and vinyl and metallic booths, eating inside would have been different from the outdoor seating, but would not have lost any of the unique ambiance.
Food

Breakfast at the Square was without complaint. My veggie overload omelet came with two pieces of toast with jam, and some crispy, spicy home fries. The bottomless coffee came in an unusual mug, in keeping with the “art” theme. The omelet was perfectly proportioned, just the right egg to veggie ratio. I could have eaten significantly more home fries, they were crispy and seasoned with a bit of a kick. There was a drink menu with all forms of barista type drinks from cappuccinos to mint chocolate mocha blends. If the other breakfast foods were as well done as my omelet, then I wouldn’t hesitate to return for a second visit.
Pricing

All this atmosphere has to be paid for somehow, and you’ll realize it with the bill. I am usually a “Eat ‘N’ Park” kind of eater, so the bill was a bit more than I’m used to. About nine dollars a plate (for breakfast) and 2.50 for drinks, the total for two was a little over 25 dollars, 30 after tip. I thought it was expensive enough to limit my visits, but not too pricey to keep me away. All in all, the company, atmosphere and food made it worth every penny and I paid the bill without any remorse.
The Square Café will be at the top of my list next time I am looking for a breakfast spot

Yummy. I’d love to try mint hot chocolate.

Sounds delicious, but $30 for two breakfasts is a bit pricey.
I’d still be willing to give it a shot.

I believe the best hot chocolate is found in Quebec
